I've always had an interest in Dungeons and Dragons, but I have never played. Despite that I think it seems so cool! And I want to talk about a few of the reasons i think it sounds so cool to me.

My Experience

I should explain my experience with Dungeons and Dragons, that way you know how qualified (or unqualified) I am to provide an opinion. First off calling it experience is probably a bit of a stretch. My biggest exposure comes from listening to many episodes of a D&D podcast, Dungeons and Daddies. I have also had a couple conversations with my brother about it who knows how to play.

That's pretty weak, but the point of this post isn't to prove that D&D is amazing. The point is to highlight how it has captured my attention. All this said I may make some mistakes and say something that is not true about D&D while explaining my interest.

What I Find Most Interesting

Most of all playing Dungeons and Dragons seems like it would be so fun! Playing through an adventure, interacting with NPCs, coming up with a plan to complete the objective all sound amazing. It's like being in one of the Fantasy movies I enjoy watching. Or if it's taken less seriously (which is likely how I would play if I ever do) it could be super funny. Listening to Dungeons and Daddies has really brought this possibility to my attention.

I also love that D&D seems to be an incredible exercise in creativity. The whole world you immerse yourself in lives inside your and your fellow player's brains. It's up to your creativity to come up with a plan to achieve your goals, then you have to come up with the steps to enact that plan. And anything can happen on that path and you must adapt your plan to fit into the new scenario. That leads to my next point.

Nearly anything can happen, it's virtually limitless. The only thing holding you back is what you imagine. If want to set out on an adventure to stop an evil caterpillar you can. I suspect once i learn more about playing Dungeons and Dragons the rules will limit this scope a bit but even then a group can agree to play by any rules they wish.

Nerd culture. Who doesn't like stories about dragons, mystical characters, and powerful weapons? Immersing myself in those stories would be so cool. Of course I want to know what I (or my character) would do if I stumbled upon a dragon and their treasure.

My Biggest Questions

If I am ever going to play there are some questions I need answers to. What is the basic 101 of Dungeons and Dragons? What do I need before I can play? How many people do I need? How do I create a character? What is up with the Dungeon Master and how hard is that to do?

I think these questions shine a light on both my interest and my ignorance. I think if I am ever going to get into D&D I am going to need someone to directly guide me though and play a few campaigns with me.

So that is why I think Dungeons and Dragons seems so cool to me. I hope one day to find out how right I am about it.
