More Creative

Creativity is so cool to me. Just making something exist that didn't before. Amazing. Seeing the things people create makes me want that for myself.

What Impresses Me

Here is a train of thought I often have: That thing is pretty cool. I can't believe someone created that. Damn creative people. This thought process comes from youTube videos, songs, movies, stories, art and others.

YouTube

Unnecessary Inventions might be the most creative person I have ever seen. If you are unaware of who he is a creator who makes some of the most ridiculous things that sever a a specific function. He is working on so many levels of creativity. Just coming up with something to invent is one thing, then he has to design them, build them and finally make an entertaining video out the process. Every time I watch one of his videos I am shocked at what he has come up with and can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

Songs

Another example of many levels, Creating the instrumental music, writing lyrics, performing the music. Just looking at lyrics I think of two artists that blow my mind. And they are very different. Ben Gibbard and Eminem. I am not the biggest fan of Eminem, but i don't need to be to see how creative he is. Its amazing that he can tell a story through his songs and on top of that get them to flow and rhyme the way he does is incredible.

I am a pretty big fan of Death Cab for Cutie. The lead singer and lyricist Ben Gibbard has always impressed me with the lyrics in their songs. He can get you to feel emotions through the story of the song and has an amazing ability use analogies to get you into the exact emotion he wants.

Movies

I love me a good animated Disney movie. I am so jealous of the people who work on those. What a marathon of a creative process. From ideation all the way through implementation the creativity just doesn't stop. How do you imagine a girl who is a huge fan of an early 2000s boy band will turn into a giant Red Panda? Then to go an make a whole film take make the whole thing feel relatable? Wow.

Thats just one movie. There are so many. insane.

Skills

I'm not silly enough to discount the role that skill or talent plays into the creative process. You could hear a beautiful song in your head but not know the first thing about playing an instrument or be able sing. You may have an idea for a banger youtube video but don't know how to record or edit. So obviously skill plays a huge role, but it's not a prerequisite. You can definitely pick up skills as you go, and there are many creative things that don't require technical skills or beginner level is plenty.

How do I want to be creative?

So I want to be more creative. But what does that mean?

Well there are several things I am drawn to create. Apps, YouTube videos, and short form writing like this post. I have some pull to music, drawing, and animation but probably not enough dedicate the time to picking up those skills to actually do them. But the others I have actually already started pursuing and I think have gotten better at, at least a little bit.

Apps

Creating Apps takes the most technical skills and time but might be the most rewarding and personally impressive. I've deployed 4 Apps to the app store which i am pretty proud of, but none of them really have much of an audience but I or my wife do regularly use 3 of the apps. Funnily for this post, the one that might be the most "creative" is the one I rarely use. It's a game called badMath. The idea is the app will give you three simple math problems with solutions, your job is to find the one that is incorrect. A fun creative idea that i think I delivered! Too bad no one plays it!

YouTube

I have create about 20 videos on my youtube channel, theAverageDev - Tucker Bichsel. They are mostly dev logs about creating my apps. I am unfortunately on a mental block for creating videos. I am struggling to not feel embarrassed about making them. That feeling combined with knowing that it does take a significant amount of effort to create a video has kept me from creating a new one for a couple months. But I am committing to pushing past that and just doing it. I will have a viedo out in June! I hope.

Writing

This hard. It's currently 12:40 a.m. and I thought i would just finish up this post and get to bed before midnight. That didn't happen. But I can feel myself exercising my creativity. So I will continue to do this.

So I am going to continue to pursue these creative outlets and watch my skills and creativity grow. Who knows where it will take me.
